Sometimes you set aside big blocks of time hoping to get a lot done, but life gets in the way. I’m not talking about planned breaks or vacation time, I mean those stretches you were genuinely looking forward to using productively, only to have them consumed by unexpected events or situations that took more energy than you anticipated.
This happens to everyone, and it happens often. Yet each time, we feel anxious and frustrated, convinced we’ve missed a golden opportunity. But here’s the thing: that time didn’t vanish. It went toward something else, usually something involving family or friends. These moments may not show immediate, tangible results like work tasks do, but they’re just as important, if not more so.
There’s another perspective worth considering. You’re disappointed about not working on your planned task during that specific window. But let’s be honest: even without the interruption, you probably wouldn’t have completed everything exactly as you imagined it while planning. We rarely do. So the regret you’re feeling shouldn’t be measured against some perfect, idealized outcome, it should be measured against the reality of what exploration and progress actually look like.
Life is unpredictable. We can’t know what turns we’ll take or when. So be a little more forgiving of yourself and others. And be grateful for what you did accomplish with the time you had.
