Build First, Scope Later: A Water Cooler Chat

Build First, Scope Later: A Water Cooler Chat

“You look like you’re drowning in requirements docs over there,” I say, watching you struggle with yet another product planning spreadsheet.

“How can you tell?” you sigh, gesturing at your monitor filled with user stories. “I’ve been trying to get this scope perfect before we start development. My brain feels like a Jira board.”

“Funny you mention that,” I lean back in my chair, spinning slightly. “I’ve been thinking about how we do this whole product planning thing all wrong.”

“Oh?” You look up, intrigued by my conspiratorial tone.

“Yeah, see, we’re all obsessed with planning everything perfectly before building. But here’s the thing — I’ve found that building something quick and scrappy first actually leads to better decisions.”

You pause, frowning. “But isn’t that wasteful? What if we have to rebuild everything?”

“That’s what I thought too!” I laugh. “But honestly, rebuilding is a small price to pay for the clarity it brings. You should’ve seen our last project — the moment we had a working prototype, all those vague stakeholder discussions suddenly became crystal clear. Even marketing knew exactly how to position it.”

“Wait…” you push away from your desk, the realization dawning. “So instead of me spending weeks perfecting this scope…”

“We could have something real to play with in half the time,” I finish your thought. “Something that sparks meaningful conversations instead of theoretical debates.”

You look at your monitor, then back at me. “You know what? I think you just saved me from requirements hell.”

I grin. “Welcome to the ‘build first, ask questions later’ club. Trust me, it’s much more fun over here.”
